Cuong Nhu, a Vietnamese style of Karate, derives its name from the Vietnamese phrase for "yin" and "yang." Cuong Nhu fuses hard and soft martial arts techniques. Cuong Nhu has techniques based on the hard techniques of Shotokan Karate, Wing Chun and Kung Fu American boxing; and the soft techniques of Judo, Aikido, Tai Chi and Vovinam, another Vietnamese style of martial art.

In 1965, Cuong Nhu's Grandmaster Ngo Dong established the first school of Cuong Nhun in Hue, Vietnam. Grandmaster Dong also founded the first school of Cuong Nhu in the United States in 1971 while he was working on his doctorate at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Since the establishment of the first U.S. school of Cuong Nhu, many schools offering Cuong Nhu have opened up across the United States.
