Gatka, whose name is based on the name of a stick used when practicing sword fighting, is also the 20th century term used to refer to the collective stick, staff and sword styles that were used during public exhibitions. Gatka is believed to have derived its style from Shastar Vidyaa, a traditional art of fighting in India. Today, much of Gatka's fighting forms and styles have European renditions or interpretations.
The potency of Gatka's fighting techniques in the field of battle is widely renowned and acclaimed. Legend has it that a Master of Gatka fought and triumphed against hundreds of adversaries. A martial art that is largely based on meditation, Gatka uses no less than ten fighting implements, with the sword as one of the most often used weapons.
