Jodo, also called Jojutsu

Shorin-Ryu Karate
Shorin-Ryu Karate combines elements of a fighting art that is native to Okinawa .....
Jodo, in literal terms means "the way of the stick." Jodo, also referred to as jojutsu, is the Japanese way of stick combat using a jo. Jodo's primary characteristic is the quick and expert delivery of a series of 12 fundamental movements using a short (approximately 128 cm.) wooden stick. When these fundamental movements are combined, Jodo students receive instructions on the 64 styles or techniques (against the sword) of Shindo Muso Ryu, usually in a successive order.

Jodo does not use any protective gear thus, Jodo practitioners need to have a good amount of courage and be ready to receive hits. The more advanced students of Jodo also learn kata, or a series of techniques, from related schools of traditional weapons such as:

- Uchida Ryu Tanjo Jutsu, where students are taught to fight with a shorter stick

- Shinto Ryu Kenjitsu, where students learn sword-to-sword fighting

- Ikaku Ryu Jitte Jitsu, where students learn to use a metal staff that is designed to counter a sword attack

- Iishin Ryu Kusarigama Jutsu, where students learn how to use a sickle and chain with a ball, but they use weapons made of wood for practice in order to avoid serious injuries

- Hojo jutsu, where students learn tying techniques
