Judo
HanmudoFounded by Grandmaster He-Young Kimm, Hanmudo is a Korean martial art that is ..... "Using an opponent's power and aggressions against him"
Professor Jigoro Kano, the founder of Kodokan Judo, said that Judo's intent is to use one's physical and mental powers in the most effective way possible. He said that the training of Judo is "to understand the true meaning of life through the mental and physical training of attack and defense. You must develop citizen to society."
Judo traces its origin to Jujitsu, an ancient Japanese martial art characterized by weaponless defense techniques (or empty handed fighting styles). Jujitsu's aim was to evade an opponent's strength and use that strength to the disadvantage of the opponent. The only drawback to Jujitsu was that it was exclusively a combat technique and a Jujitsu fighter would become a victor only after he kills or cripples his opponent. For Dr. Jigoro Kano, this wasn't a good idea. So in 1882, he set himself to work in finding a way of transforming the deadly art of Jujitsu into a sport. Dr. Kano changed or removed Jujitsu's deadly techniques and came up with Judo, the gentle way. Without the dangerous techniques of Jujitsu, practitioners could practice Judo for competitions or simply do it for physical conditioning.
Judo is referred to as "the gentle way" because it enables a person to reach a goal with greatest competency using the least amount of effort. As a sport, Judo espouses sportsmanship, mutual respect, confidence in oneself, and ethical and moral development. In addition, Judo is regarded as both an art and a science. Judo is an art in the sense that it encourages a person to develop self-respect, self-confidence and self-expression. Judo is a science in the sense that it includes the study of basic natural laws such as gravity, friction, momentum, weight, transmission and the unity of forces.
At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Judo became an Olympic sport for men and has been an Olympic sport since then. Judo has been an Olympic sport for women since the 1988 Olympics held in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Kano and Judo are credited as the originators of the colored belt ranking system that almost all martial arts styles are using today.
