Krav Maga

Krav Maga (pronounced as "krahv muh-GAH") is a self-defense and fighting system that originated from Israel. Krav Maga, which means "contact fight" or "the touch of the fighter", is the sanctioned hand-to-hand fighting system used by members of the Israeli defense forces.
The proponent of Krav Maga was a champion heavyweight boxer by the name of Imrich "Imi" Sde-Or. Imi, who was also a dancer and trapeze artist, had studied jiu-jitsu and judo. Based on what he learned from the two fighting arts, Imi developed the Israeli martial art of self-defense. Moni Aizik, a teacher and a martial arts master, was a jujitsu and judo expert. After Imi developed his martial art, Aizik analyzed it and reconstructed it specifically for the use of the Israeli army.
In the early half of the 1940s, members of underground liberation groups mobilized themselves towards making Israel an independent country. At that time, carrying weapons was prohibited so the liberation groups fought using knives and sticks. They also used their knowledge of Krav Maga and they were met with considerable success. It was also during this time that Krav Maga's creator realized that Israeli fighters had different fighting and defense needs compared to classical martial art fighters. Thus, new techniques were developed and incorporated in Krav Maga. Thus, Krav Maga fighters learned self-defense techniques against pistols, guns and hand grenades.
In addition to being the authorized fighting system of Israel's army, Krav Maga is also being taught widely in Israeli public schools. For the full story on Martial Arts click HERE
