Kum Do Important terms:

* Kum Do (Kendo) is the art of sword fencing.

* Guhapdo (Iado) is the art of drawing the sword and cutting.

* Ki Kong refers to meditation to focus the mind.

Kum Do, which has been perfected several hundred years ago during the Shilla Dynasty, is Korea's art of sword fencing. Because of its similarity with the Japanese Kendo, historians are of the opinion that Kum Do comes from the same origin as Japanese Kendo.

Concentration, power and self-control are the focus of Kum Do. Because the fights are done wearing "hogu" or full body armor, Kum Do is regarded as a safe martial art. Juk Do, a bamboo practice sword, is used in Kum Do training. Kum Do students and practitioners strive to achieve Ki Kum Che wherein the spirit, sword and body act as one when striking with the sword. In order to achieve Ki Kum Che, a Kum Do student works on having precise control over his body.

Several benefits can be derived from learning and practicing Kum Do. For one, because it is important learn precise control of the sword, a Kum Do practitioner will be able to enhance their concentration and focus skills. In addition, the practice of Kum Do will instill confidence among students, enabling them to mature personally and morally. Kum Do practitioners become good, upright citizens, since virtues such as honesty, honor, self-control and courtesy are concepts upon which Kum Do is based. Another benefit for practicing Kum Do is good health since Kum Do involves intense and active physical workouts. And lastly, Kum Do practitioners learn how they can use ordinary, every day objects like broomsticks, canes or umbrellas as weapons for self-defense.

Kum Do students below black belt are ranked traditionally from 10th Gup to 1st Gup. Students with ranks above black belt are ranked from 1st Dan to 10th Dan. In order to achieve a higher belt ranking, a Kum Do student must be able to perform the striking forms for his current rank in proper form as well as demonstrate the sparring forms and free-sparring forms of the next belt.
